The crossing to the
boomerang-shaped island - Pulau Ubin (PU) took around 10 minutes from Changi Jetty
which is conveniently situated near ChangiVillage Bus Terminal. The
bumboat (capacity 12 passengers) ride cost $2.0 one way. Once arriving in PU
you can find rows of bike shops with whole-day retail ranging from $3-$12. We decided to
take the $12.00 mountain bike. The owner also gave out copies
PU map ( proved to be next to useless for its ineligible marking). After verifying brakes
, gears and pedals were in working
condition we hit the paved road. We
cycled past 'kampong' houses with corrugated zinc roof. Each had small
plots of lands yielding various
fruit trees such as rambutan, nangka etc. We took a short break at a
resting hut in Jln Durian. Noticing a nearby house we
invited ourselves to the compound of a Malay house. After seeking Mak Chik's
permission we wondered off her garden. We found the usual fruit
trees like rambutan, nangka, durian, chempetak, langsat - the last two were
less common in the Singapore Island. I noticed nettings were placed waist-height
around the trees which I guessed facilitate easier retrieval of fallen
durians. Nearby the yellow-orange bunch of sacara flowers caught
my attention. Just outside her house - scores of long -tail
monkeys were having fun in the Nipah
palms. Some even jumped into the blackish water of the canal.
