Plants commonly found in Singapore 

 You do not have to go far to find trees and shrubs in your neighborhood.  I remembered my Iranian friend on his first trip to Singapore commented that Singapore is like a Paradise... He was referring to the pretty plants and flowers.

Belinjau (Gnetum gnenom) -  Flowers of Keropok Tree.  Jelutong (Dyera costulata) -  Chewing Gum Tree.  Find out how the  latex was once harvested to make the base substrate for chewing gum. Pulai (Alstonia angustiloba) with umbrella- like multi-tier canopies.
One cool night (after a heavy downpour)  I walked pass a rows of flowering Belinjau and was greeted with  a  sweet sickening smell. In the background is another common wayside tree - Tanjong tree.

 

 

Eucalyptus trees with willow-like leaf - acid ID test : crushed  a leaf and smell  aromatic oil released.   Figs ripening in April. Don't remember seeing it flower. Why? The flowers are located INSIDE the fruits.   Chinese name is  'wu hua guo' or ' fruit with no flower'  Medusa's hair ? - No its Fishtail  palm's ( Caryota mitis) berries!

Hanging like a giant tongue (4" width and  easy a foot long!) - Seed Pod of Saraca    African Tulip ( Spathodea  campanulata). Note the elongated pod.
Peanuts growing  on tree ? No,  this is Tamarind ( Tamarindus indica ).  From the  three and half inch long fruit you obtain  'asam java '  April 17 '05. Close-up of the tiny flower showing what gave the flowering tree a gold - yellowish tinge dotted with red color. The unopened flower bud is red, and petals are lined with blood-red 'vein'. April 17 '05.
